Welcome to the Grade 6 & 7 POD Program

September is an exciting time of year full of promise, renewed energy and joy. Your child is naturally curious and we are eager to be part of this fantastic journey. Grade 6 and 7 are incredible years of opportunity for social and emotional growth as well as academically. Home and school communication is vital to your child’s success, and it is our goal to maintain these clear lines of communication throughout the year.

What is the POD?
The POD (grades 6 & 7) is a small, self-contained community within the broader Brockton community, specifically designed to help students transition from the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) to the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and to prepare for the shift from elementary school to high school.

Teachers:

Ms MacRae - Grade 6 Homeroom (Language & Literature, Individuals and Societies)

Mrs Mills - Grade 7 Homeroom (Math & Science)

Benefits of the POD include:
  • a personalized and responsive learning environment that will support an eventual successful transition from Junior School to Senior School;
  • a supportive and personalized approach that will enhance the smooth movement from the PYP (ending in grade 5) into the MYP (starting at grade 6);
  • a gradual and inspired transition into leadership and service work, which requires more independence and responsibility;
  • time for students to further develop their “Approaches to Learning skills”, and to  'take responsibility for their own learning' (which is one of the highest tenets of the MYP);
  •
  • the building of a strong and supportive social cohort; and
  • a thoughtful introduction to MYP assessment & marking practices (1-7 scale).

As the POD program works to promote the transition from the Junior to Senior School; a key component is for students to further develop their Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills
  • Communication - asking for help, negotiating with others
  • Collaboration - working as a team, making fair decisions, practising empathy
  • Self-management - organizing belongings and lockers, being mindful of others/surroundings
  • Thinking - critical and creative thinking
These skills look to build independent and responsible learners, so please encourage your child to manage their belongings and self by dropping them off at the front entrance to school and saying goodbye there.
