Tragedy in our Lynn Valley Community

Our Brockton community is deeply saddened by the news of the tragic fire that erupted in Lynn Valley in the early hours of June 11. Within hours, we learned that two people - a mother and her son - had lost their lives. Sixteen people were injured, and almost 150 residents were transported by bus to our local Safeway, as well as the Mickey McDougall Community Centre, where they took refuge. A member of our Brockton faculty was among those who fled from their home in the early hours of Monday morning. The broader community is coming together quickly; schools, businesses, individuals, and local industry have reached out to find a way to help those who are grieving and displaced. On Wednesday and Friday, a message was sent to families via MySchool with important information regarding donations and additional resources.

While donations of items have been requested, at this moment, the Lynn Valley Lions Club is overwhelmed with items and is asking for folks to hold off for the time being. Please refer to the Lions Club website for ongoing updates on the donations needed (http://www.lvlions.com/fire-relief-information-june-11-2018/).

How you can help the cause:

1. Contribute to the efforts being organized by Grade 9 student, Rhudi Rhyane-Grainger and his mom Sera who have already begun purchasing and putting together toiletry kits for the individuals affected. If you would like to join them in their efforts to continue building these kits, please contact them at serarhyane@yahoo.ca or by calling 604-910-6022.

2. Take part in TOONIE TUESDAY this Tuesday at Brockton School: bring your Toonies ($2) and look out for the firefighter boots that will be at the front of the school on Tuesday, June 19th.

3. Purchase Grocery store gift cards or donate cash (to be dropped off at Brockton School front office).

4. Donate directly to the Blueshore Financial Lynn Valley account (name: Fire Relief 93081553), set up by the Lynn Valley Lions Club, or the
GoFundMe campaign.

Thank you, Brockton community, for your support.
