SPOTLIGHT: BRENDA BALL

Many of you know our Senior School Director, Ms. Ball but you might not know that her love of teaching coupled with her love of languages (she speaks 5!) took her to post-communist Czech Republic and back before landing at Brockton. When asked what she loves about Brockton she says “We really live the IB learner profile traits of a caring school that is also daring: daring to try new things and be risk-takers - true mavericks in our field. I believe this fosters the risk-taking attitude for our students too.”

Brenda is very passionate about curriculum design. As a student, she was always bored by “worksheet teachers” and made it her mission to stretch the imagination of curriculum for her team; so that students can have an authentic learning experience fostering creative and flexible thinking into the future. Ms. Ball travels the province as a Provincial Outreach Facilitator, teaching teachers and administrators about BC’s new curriculum and has co-authored an inquiry based text book for Social Studies 9 which was adopted by many school districts and independent schools in British Columbia. Of late, her passion has led her to support teachers as a Continuing Education Instructor at Queen’s University.

Get to know Ms. Ball, lightning round:

Three words you would use to describe Brockton? Vibrant, Evolving, Caring

Your favourite book? One of my all time favourite books is Suite Francaise by Irene Nemirovsky: it is one of the most realistic novels set in World War 2 and speaks to the Holocaust.

One person you would take with you on a deserted island? I consider Wangari Maathai to be one of the most important and least known famous people of late, and I wish I could pick her brain about justice, democracy, environment, ethics, rights, economics, and more, so I’d gladly invite her to an island to teach me.

What would you be if you weren’t teaching? a landscaper. I love the beauty - and the exercise- of it, and it is certainly nice to immediately see the fruits of your labour.

What do you like to do when you aren’t at Brockton? hiking in the local mountains, biking, or playing field hockey - I’ve been with the same teammates for over 25 years!
