The start of a new school year is just around the corner, and anxiety can co-exist with the excitement of new classrooms, friends, and teachers. If you’re in need of some back-to-school tips to help ease any nerves, we’re here to help!
Our Top Tips for Back-To-School
Re-establish your school day routine. It can take time to adjust to the school routine, so practice in the weeks leading up to the first day back. This could include getting up at a certain time each day, blocking out time for reading and activities to simulate homework, and setting a solid bedtime routine.
Talk about any anxieties. Let your children know that it’s ok (and normal) to be nervous. Many other children feel this way before school, as do some teachers! This article from the Kelty Mental Health Resource Centre has some good tips for promoting resilience in the face of anxiety.
Introduce your children to their new teachers. Some families find it comforting to put a face to a name before the school year starts. Brockton’s faculty and staff are listed on our site for families to explore.
Plan your route. If you’re starting at a new school (or starting school for the first time), your child might find it reassuring to make the journey to campus before the first day of school. While you won’t have access to their classroom until the first week of school, the grounds are open over summer break, as is the playground!
Encourage independence and participation in back-to-school planning. Take your child shopping for supplies, check out the extracurriculars on offer, and get them to pack their own bags for the first day of school. Children who play an active role in their back-to-school preparations are more likely to have a smooth transition.
