Brockton’s mission is to inspire the growth of outstanding humans. Our Portrait of a Graduate describes the attributes our students will embody by the time they graduate, which sets them apart as outstanding humans.
Brockton graduates will exhibit purpose. They will appreciate the opportunity and responsibility to live a meaningful life in contribution to a better world.
Students at Brockton are not just encouraged to have a sense of purpose but are empowered to understand their role in the world. From their earliest years, Brockton students are learning in local, national, and global contexts, and are inspired to look beyond themselves and consider the impact they can have on their communities.
Grade 1 students participate in a Unit of Inquiry, ‘How We Organize Ourselves,’ where they inquire into the roles and responsibilities of people within a community. Students get to explore diverse communities and how they are organized, learning from members of those communities. They also work together to explore what their own community looks like and where each individual fits in. Through this exploration, students learn how everyone makes an impact.
The Primary Years Programme (PYP) Exhibition in Grade 5 challenges students to explore, document, and share their understanding of an issue or topic that is personally important to them. Topics often include causes such as animal rights, environmental responsibility, and social justice. Through research and interviews, students gain perspective and insights about their topic and develop actions for positive change based on their findings. By the end of the project, they understand and can articulate ways in which they and others can positively impact the world around them.
From Grade 7, students can join a Community Action Team (CAT) as part of the student leadership program. These teams allow students to engage in service learning in different areas, including Arts and Culture, Social Justice, and Health and Wellbeing. Team members collaborate to develop ideas for raising awareness of various causes and organize school and community initiatives such as food drives and fundraisers.
We see our graduates exhibiting purpose through the roles Brockton Alumni take on once they leave our grounds. Within their chosen post-secondary journeys, our grads often take on leadership roles and forge paths which reflect their desire to contribute to a better world.
